BACKGROUND & EDUCATION:
Dr. Joy Gerasco was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio where she attended The Ohio State University and earned a Bachelor in Science of Chemistry in 2014. Growing up, Dr. Joy wanted to teach doctors, so she pursued both a Doctorate of Dental Medicine (DMD) in combination with a Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD) at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. Dr. Joy’s PhD research was focused on the discovery of epigenetic drugs to treat inflammatory bone loss. She went on to present her research at several national and international meetings, earning various awards and accolades for her contributions to science. Dr. Joy also served as president of the student government at MUSC in 2020, leading the student body through one of the most unique years in her lifetime. Once she completed dental school, she went on to obtain specialty training in orthodontics at the prestigious University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she received a Master’s degree for her work studying antibiotic effects on bone.
EXCELLENCE IN ORTHODONTICS:
Dr. Joy Gerasco is an active member of the American Association of Orthodontist (AAO), Southern Association of Orthodontists (SAO), American Dental Association (ADA) and the North Carolina Dental Society. She served as president of the Student Training and Research network within the International Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research (IADR). Dr. Joy was inducted as a member of both Omicron Kappa Upsilon and Rho Chi, highly respected honorary societies in Dentistry and Pharmacy, respectively. Dr. Joy is passionate about providing evidence-based orthodontic care and bringing the most advanced and current technologies and techniques into the clinic. She loves to make people smile and bring happiness to their day through both excellent orthodontics and providing an outstanding patient experience.
FAMILY LIFE:
Dr. Joy married her high school sweetheart, Felix, in 2021. When Dr. Joy isn’t creating smiles, she enjoys hiking, baking and making pottery. She is a major foodie and she and her husband love to try new restaurants while traveling and in the Triangle. Dr. Joy is a hardcore gamer, and loves all types of games but has always had a major soft spot for video games. She also took hip-hop dancing classes for several years, and still maintains her ability to do a six-step breakdancing move when the right moment strikes!
Dr. Joy is extremely grateful for the opportunity to practice orthodontics with Dr. Vinson and the team at Vinson Orthodontics.
